There are many routes you can take to become a qualified Construction Site Supervisor. However, they all contain one vital part – the training.
A Construction Site Supervisor manages work activities on a construction site. Day-to-day a Supervisor would organise, plan and control projects. They would also have a range of health and safety duties that they must adhere to throughout their work.
The CITB SSSTS course is a health and safety training suitable for those who are supervisors or looking to progress to a supervisory role that work within the construction, building and civil engineering industries.

Contribution from delegates throughout the course is key, as well as delivering a toolbox talk to the other delegates on the course.
You will also complete an exam at the end of the course. This consists of 30 questions that are multiple choice and set by CITB.
The online SSSTS course and classroom version are both delivered over two consecutive days. A variety of subjects are covered in an engaging and interactive way throughout the course.
If you complete and pass this course, you will gain a certificate that expires about five years. If you need to refresh your certificate, you can do so by completing the SSSTS Refresher course before your certificate expires.
Yes, the course is available to complete online via Zoom with a live tutor. To meet the requirements to do the online version of this course, you must use a laptop or computer that has a webcam and microphone.
Upcoming public dates are available to book online, or you can enquire about having it delivered as an in-house course to a group of employees.
This course is also available to complete in the classroom as a public course or at a venue of your choice for a group of employees.

If you complete and pass the CITB SSSTS course, within 6-8 weeks you’ll receive your certificate. This certificate is valid for 5 years.
If you have previously completed and passed the CITB SSSTS course with 3B Training and need a replacement certificate, you will need to request this in writing to [email protected] and the cost is £35+VAT. Alternatively, you can contact CITB directly for a replacement.
If you would like to demonstrate your competency further you may want to obtain a Gold Supervisor Card. The Gold CSCS Card is highly recognised in the industry and can be gained through an NVQ Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision.
You must earn your stripes in the construction industry beforehand. You cannot simply walk into a Site Supervisor job without getting your boots dirty. Prior experience with tools, building materials and site processes are vital traits to have. A good number of Supervisors have worked their way up by working at a trade or as a site worker.
You will also need certain personal skills to be able to do the role well. Employers will require leadership and teamwork qualities as you will be the line manager of workers on-site. You must have good knowledge of construction and the construction process. Managers above you will put you under pressure so you need to be able to take criticism and pressure well.
If you currently are in education and the role appeals to you, you could take a degree through university to get there. A qualification in construction management, civil engineering, engineering or surveying should equip you for the role.
