In March 2021, NEBOSH released an updated syllabus for the NEBOSH Construction Certificate. This revision includes significant changes, and becoming familiar with industry updates is crucial to staying aligned with current industry standards.
In this blog, we cover the changes made to the NEBOSH Construction syllabus, questions around the open-book exam, and the benefits this qualification has to organisations.
The adaptation of the syllabus ensures the course better meets the ever-changing needs of the construction industry. These changes came following the NEBOSH General syllabus change in 2018.
Similar to the General Certificate changes, these changes were encouraged by feedback provided by Learning Partners, employers, learners and subject experts. The changes aim to address contemporary health and safety challenges in the construction sector.
As construction is one of the highest-risk industries, it is vital to update training like this to ensure it remains aligned with industry standards and meets the requirements for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card.
NEBOSH Health & Safety Management for Construction was previously split into three modules, NG1, NCC1 and NCC2 (the practical assessment). Whereas now it’s just NC1, which is the complete course aside from the end-of-course exam.
The syllabus study time has reduced from roughly 164 hours to around 116 hours of study, making it more accessible while preserving course quality. The assessment process has been replaced from the traditional face-to-face and practical assessment to scenario-based open-book exams over a 48-hour window.
Furthermore, the updated qualification now carries a Level 7 accreditation, reflecting its advanced level of study and enhancing its recognition within the industry.
The open Book Exam is the only way to assess the NEBOSH Health & Safety Management for Construction. Previously, you had to attend a combination of face-to-face and practical assessments for your submission.
You access the Open Book Exam online, meaning you can complete it wherever you please. The delegate will be provided with specific dates for the exam as part of their course, and they are open for 48 hours.
To take part in the Open Book Exam, learners should follow these steps:
Register – We will provide you with a Delegate Registration Form. Complete the form and return it to 3B Training.
Log in to the exam platform – Eight days before the exam, NEBOSH will email your login details. You can then access the platform and familiarise yourself with its features.
Examination day – From 9 a.m., you’ll be able to download the OBE question paper from the platform. You will have 24 hours to complete and submit your answers.
Closing interview – After the exam, 3B Training will arrange a short interview to review your training experience and gather feedback.
Receive your results – NEBOSH will email your results within 50 days of the exam date.
Note: Upcoming exam dates and estimated result release dates for digital assessments are available on the NEBOSH website.
The NEBOSH Construction Certificate has many benefits for organisations, some of which include:
Improved construction safety knowledge – Those who complete the NEBOSH Construction Certificate develop a thorough understanding of health and safety risks unique to construction sites. This knowledge supports safer site practices, from hazard identification to implementing effective control measures.
Reduced workplace accidents – NEBOSH-trained individuals can identify, assess, and manage construction-specific risks more effectively. Fewer incidents mean reduced downtime, lower insurance costs, and fewer compensation claims.
Legal compliance in construction – The qualification ensures organisations operate in line with UK health and safety legislation and relevant industry standards. This helps avoid fines, prosecutions, and reputational harm.
Cost savings through prevention – Organisations save money by avoiding the costs of incidents, lost productivity and project delays.
Enhanced industry reputation – Holding the NEBOSH Construction Certificate demonstrates a strong commitment to workforce welfare and site safety. This can be a deciding factor in winning contracts and attracting skilled workers
Empowered and confident workforce – Employees and managers gain practical skills to tackle health and safety challenges on-site. This improves confidence, competence, and team morale.
Leadership and accountability in safety – Managers with the NEBOSH Construction Certificate can set a positive example, mentor others, and implement structured safety processes with greater authority and credibility.
