NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety is a competence-based qualification for anyone responsible for health and safety in their workplace.

This qualification will ensure that you can practice your role competently, and up to the standard that is required.

NOTE: You will need approx. 2 years of experience in the role related to this NVQ, and currently be working in a relevant role.

What Does the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Cover?

This level 3 NVQ includes the following mandatory units:

  • Developing procedures to control work operations safely
  • Promoting a culture of health and safety in the workplace
  • Ensuring responsibility for actions to reduce health and safety risks
  • Monitoring procedures to safely control work operations
  • Conducting a health and safety risk assessment of the workplace
You will also have to gain the relevant amount of credits from the below optional units:
  • Aiming to protect the environment through actions in the workplace
  • Supervising the health, safety, and welfare of a learner
  • Evaluating and investigating health and safety complaints and incidents in the workplace
  • Reviewing health and safety procedures in the workplace

To pass the NVQ level 3 health and safety, you are required to complete each of the units by providing the relevant evidence.

Once you have completed all the units, the assessor will review the portfolio and provide feedback.

After you have responded to the feedback, the assessor will send the portfolio to an IQA, who will decide if the NVQ is complete.

What Happens During an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety

Upon enrolment

You will be given an assessor. The assessor will work with you to build a portfolio of evidence via our ePortfolio system Bud.

They will also arrange a remote or on-site induction

The induction is used to plan out how you will gather the relevant evidence to complete the course. The assessor will also regularly review your progression to ensure that you are keeping on track.

You will be assessed on-site through various methods

Such as observations, written questions, evidence generated from the workplace, professional discussion, and witness testimonials.

      Typical completion time is 4-6 months. Learners are supported to complete within a 6-month timeframe, depending on how quickly you are able to meet the NVQ’s requirements.

      The NVQ format is flexible. Our assessors can arrange calls, evidence gathering and assessments around your workload.

    • How do I obtain my CSCS card after completion?

      On completion of the NVQ, you are required to apply to CSCS directly for your card and supply them with your NVQ certificate details.

      You will also need to complete the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test before applying for your CSCS card.

    • What are the entry requirements for the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety?

      You must be working in a health and safety related role, and above the age of 16.
