Wigan Youth Zone opened in 2013 and is a purpose-built facility in Wigan town centre. The charity’s aim is to provide the town’s young people with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.
The charity has grown into one of the largest youth zones in Europe and is home to state-of-the-art facilities that young people can’t find anywhere else in one place in the borough.
The Youth Zone is the brainchild of Wigan businessmen Dave Whelan, Martin Ainscough and Bill Ainscough, who donated the costs to establish the facility. The scheme was OnSide’s first Youth Zone to be funded mainly by private sector money.
From a climbing wall and radio station to a skate park, a gym, and a dance studio. With more than twenty activities happening every day on site and across Wigan and Leigh, every young person aged 8 – 19 (up to 25 with additional needs) is welcome at Wigan Youth Zone.
The Youth Zone is about more than just simply getting young people off the streets. It is a facility where young people can be supported to achieve their dreams and develop achievable aspirations for their future.
