Why take this course?

The Protecting Workers on the Track – Engineering Hours (PWT-EH) course qualifies individuals to manage worksites and protect staff during Engineering Hours on London Underground infrastructure.

It ensures compliance with legislation and LU rules, while giving participants the knowledge and skills to provide safe working environments, monitor activity, and take corrective action when required.

On completion, participants receive an updated track certificate with PWT-EH, SPC, and BTA endorsements, valid for two years.

This course can also be taken as a refresher for existing PWT-EH competency holders to update and confirm their knowledge to continue managing worksites and protecting workers during engineering hours.

What does the training involve?

This course equips participants to:

  • Understand and carry out the duties of a Site Person in Charge (SPC)
  • Provide protection for workers during Engineering Hours
  • Safely access worksites and confirm traction current is off
  • Verify that train movements have ceased before work begins
  • Book on/off with relevant LU personnel
  • Deliver effective safety briefings to staff
  • Monitor work, identify hazards, and manage overruns
  • Apply additional procedures where necessary
  • Use and demonstrate a Current Rail Indicator Device (CRID)
Requirements before attending:
  • Valid Sentinel card with LU-WSSI induction
  • Valid LU medical assessment to protection level (5 years)
  • Valid track certification with in-date Basic Track Awareness
  • In-date or expired (within 14 days) PWT-EH certificate (Refresher Course only)

Other details:

  • Duration: 4 days (optional 5th day with demarcation module)
  • PPE: Required for practical elements – high-visibility clothing with sponsor’s name and sturdy safety footwear (not provided by training centre)
  • Follow-up: Two mentored onsite assessments within 6 months + internal LU verification number
  • PPE is NOT required for the Refresher Course, unless additional bolt-on modules or practical elements are included.

Refresher Course structure 2-days

  • Day 1: SPC theory recap and knowledge refresh before theory assessment
  • Day 2: PWT-EH theory recap and written and practical assessments
  • Issue of updated PWT-EH certificate (valid for 2 years)

  • SPC theory and practical briefing
  • PWT-EH theory and practical assessments
  • Safe access to sites, traction current checks, and observing last trains
  • Communication and liaison with LU personnel
  • Emergency procedures and monitoring responsibilities
  • Current Rail Indicator Device (CRID) use and assessment
  • Staff briefings and ongoing safety responsibilities
  • Optional demarcation module (day five)
Assessments include:
  • SPC written theory (80% pass)
  • SPC practical briefing (not relevant to Refresher Course)
  • PWT-EH written theory (80% pass)
  • PWT-EH practical assessment (100% pass)
  • PWT-EH practical briefing (not relevant to Refresher Course)
  • CRID written theory (80% pass) and practical demonstration

The course is delivered over four full days, with both day and night sessions available.

  • Day four: PWT-EH practical assessment, PWT-EH theory assessment, CRID practical, PWT-EH briefing

    PWT-EH theory, written test (80% pass), practical briefing, practical track assessment (100% pass), and CRID assessments.

  • What if I fail an assessment?

    You must rebook and retake the course from the start.

  • What is CRID?

    The Current Rail Indicator Device, used to confirm traction current is off before work begins.

  • What follow-up is required after training?

    You must complete two mentored onsite assessments within 6 months and obtain an internal LU verification number before starting mentoring.

  • What happens if I don’t complete my onsite assessments in time?

    You will need to repeat the full training cycle.

  • How long is the certificate valid?

    Two years, after which you must renew.

  • Why is this course important?

    It ensures safe and compliant management of worksites during Engineering Hours, protecting both staff and the travelling public.

  • What if my PWT-EH has expired for more than 14 days?

    You must complete the initial PWT-EH course.
