Civil engineering covers a wide range of specialisms, each focused on different aspects of the built environment. Common types of civil engineers include structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, transportation engineers, environmental engineers, water resources engineers, construction engineers, and materials engineers. Each role plays a vital part in designing, building, and maintaining safe, functional, and sustainable infrastructure.
In many cases, yes, civil service training roles are paid, particularly for apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and trainee positions. Pay levels vary depending on the department, role, and training programme, but participants are typically employed while completing structured training. Some standalone courses or qualifications may be unpaid, so it is important to check with your employer the specific terms of your training.
The length of construction training depends on the course type, qualification level, and career pathway. Short courses such as health and safety or plant training may take a few days, while qualifications like NVQs, apprenticeships, or professional certificates can take several months to several years. Training can often be tailored to suit individual experience levels and employer requirements.
Construction safety training focuses on identifying, managing, and reducing risks commonly found on construction sites. It covers key topics such as hazard awareness, risk assessments, safe systems of work, legal responsibilities, and emergency procedures. This training is essential for ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation and for protecting workers, contractors, and the public.
