Face fit testing determines whether RPE or Respiratory Protective Equipment correctly fits an individual. It must fit without breaking the tight seal to their face.
By successfully completing the test, the wearer can undertake work around harmful respiratory hazards.
Yes, it is a legal requirement for anyone who is required to wear tight fitting RPE for their work.
This is an approved code of practice under the COSHH Regulations 2002.
If RPE isn’t tested by a competent person, the wearer may not have a tight seal to their face. As a result, they will be at risk of consuming harmful substances. These can include construction dust or gases from their work activities.
A face fit test must be carried out by a competent person who has been appropriately trained and assessed. Completing a recognised face fit tester training course ensures the individual understands the correct testing procedures, equipment use, and legal requirements. Employers are responsible for ensuring testers are suitably trained and able to demonstrate competence in line with HSE guidance.
The two types of face fit testing are qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative testing relies on the wearer’s sensory response to a test agent, while quantitative testing uses specialist equipment to measure leakage around the face seal. A face fit tester training course covers the best methods for different types of respiratory protective equipment.
To become Fit2Fit accredited, individuals must first complete a recognised face fit tester training course that covers theory, practical testing, and competency assessment. Following training, candidates can apply to the Fit2Fit RPE Fit Test Providers Accreditation Scheme and demonstrate ongoing competence. Accreditation provides assurance to employers and clients that face fit testing is being carried out to a nationally recognised standard.
It is recommended you complete Face Fit Training annually in order to stay compliant.
A face fit test typically takes around 20-30 minutes per person, while the face fit testing training courses are delivered in one day with both theory and practical elements.
Delegates need to bring the mask they use at work and be clean-shaven where the mask seals.
