An IOSH qualification is a recognised health and safety certification awarded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, a leading professional body for safety practitioners worldwide. IOSH courses are designed to provide practical, workplace-focused knowledge that helps individuals understand their responsibilities, identify hazards, and manage risks effectively. These qualifications are suitable for employees at all levels, from frontline staff to senior leaders, and are widely valued by employers across all industries.
IOSH training focuses on real-world application rather than theory alone, ensuring delegates can immediately apply what they learn in their day-to-day roles. Courses such as IOSH Working Safely, Managing Safely, and Leading Safely are structured to match different levels of responsibility within an organisation. This makes IOSH qualifications an accessible and effective way to improve safety awareness and compliance in the workplace.
IOSH courses are essential for creating safer, more compliant workplaces by equipping individuals with the knowledge and confidence to manage health and safety risks effectively. They help organisations meet legal obligations, reduce workplace incidents, and promote a strong safety culture at every level. By training staff through IOSH-accredited programmes, businesses demonstrate a clear commitment to employee wellbeing and responsible management.
In addition to improving safety performance, IOSH qualifications support professional development and leadership capability. Employees gain practical skills that enhance decision-making and risk management, while managers and leaders learn how to influence behaviour and embed safety into organisational strategy. This results in improved productivity, reduced downtime, and a more resilient, safety-conscious workforce.

The Managing Safely course typically takes around three days to complete when delivered in a classroom or virtual classroom format. The course duration ensures sufficient time to cover both theory and practical application of health and safety principles.
The Managing Safely qualification is generally considered a Level 2–3 equivalent qualification. It is designed for managers and supervisors who need a solid understanding of health and safety responsibilities without the academic depth of higher-level qualifications like NEBOSH. The course focuses on practical, workplace-based risk management rather than formal academic assessment.
An IOSH course includes a combination of theoretical learning and practical exercises tailored to the learner’s role. Topics often cover hazard identification, risk assessment, incident investigation, and understanding legal responsibilities. The courses also include assessments to ensure delegates can apply what they have learned in real workplace situations.
Having an IOSH qualification does not automatically replace the need for a CSCS card. A CSCS card demonstrates construction-specific competence and is often required to access construction sites. While IOSH training supports health and safety knowledge, CSCS requirements are determined by site rules and industry regulations.
The Managing Safely course does not have an official expiry date. However, it is recommended that the course is refreshed every three years to keep knowledge up to date with changes in legislation and best practice. Many organisations choose to refresh training regularly to maintain strong safety standards and compliance.
