Are you wondering which course is right for you? IOSH or NEBOSH?
Choosing between the two can be a difficult decision to make. The HSE and employers across the country highly recognise both qualifications. However, we hope to give you all the information you need below to decide which is best for you.
NEBOSH or the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health is a global awarding body that offers a range of health and safety or risk management training courses for health and safety professionals.
IOSH is the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. It’s a global organisation based in the UK that offers professional qualifications to raise workplace health and safety standards.
Audience
IOSH courses are suitable for anyone with health and safety responsibilities, regardless of their role or level in the business. In contrast, NEBOSH qualifications are aimed at existing or aspiring health and safety professionals who need a more advanced, globally recognised certification.
Course duration
IOSH courses are shorter and can usually be completed within 1–3 days. NEBOSH Certificates take much longer, with the shortest requiring around 10 days of training plus additional personal study.
Cost:
IOSH is generally much cheaper due to its shorter length and less complex content. NEBOSH is more expensive because it offers a deeper, more detailed level of training.
Validity
Neither qualification expires. However, IOSH recommends updating your knowledge every three years.
Exams
IOSH assessments typically take place during the course, including a practical risk assessment for IOSH Managing Safely®. NEBOSH exams are held separately on fixed dates throughout the year (roughly every three months), and usually include a written exam and a practical risk assessment.
Course structure
NEBOSH General Certificate training is split into two modules (NG1 and NG2), usually delivered over separate weeks. After completing both modules, learners must pass the written exam and the practical assessment to achieve the qualification.
IOSH offers a membership structure that NEBOSH doesn’t. This means that graduates of IOSH accredited courses can gain membership status relevant to their level of expertise in health and safety. Take a look at the IOSH membership categories.
There is no right or wrong answer. No matter which qualification you choose, they will each improve your workplace skills and increase your health and safety knowledge.
NEBOSH for someone who is looking to further their career in health and safety, while IOSH for someone who has some health and safety responsibilities as part of their wider job role.
