The CITB health and safety awareness course is a one day training course for new entrants to the construction sector. This one day health and safety course will provide you with a solid knowledge of health and safety. It will also teach you your responsibilities and legal duties, that you need in the construction industry.

CITB Health and Safety Awareness course content
The CITB Health and Safety Awareness course provides a basic introduction to understanding potential construction site hazards and how everyone can keep the workplace safe.
The units that the Health and Safety Awareness training course will cover are:
Your general responsibilities as a worker to look after yourself and other worker’s health and safety
Work safely, work in partnership, wear PPE and report hazards and accidents.
High risk activities
Working at height safely, underground and overhead services, and practicing proper manual handling, confined spaces and excavation.
Legal liabilities and requirements
Having the confidence to report and prevent accidents
Have an understanding of Health and Safety law
Includes the Health and Safety Act and its surrounding regulations concerning the construction industry – Working at Height Regulations 2005, RIDDOR 2015, COSHH 2002, PPE Regulations 1992, Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
Health and welfare on a construction site
The dangers of hazardous substances (including asbestos), dust and fumes and how to protect yourself and others. As well as vibration, noise and safety with site transport.
An introduction to health and welfare
Includes following first aid and emergency procedures on-site and controlling and preventing fire. We will also cover safety signs, electrical safety, mobile work equipment and lifting operations and equipment.
Construction environmental awareness and waste control
Site environmental rules, your work impact on the environment and your individual responsibilities.
Risk assessments
What are they for? The hierarchy of control and hazard identification.
Inspection and selection of work equipment
Such as: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), handheld tools and equipment.
Final examination
To pass the Health and Safety Awareness course, you must be involved in the course discussion and complete individual and/or group presentations. You must also score over 25 out of 30 on the CITB test multiple-choice assessment.
How long is this CITB Health and Safety course?
This is a one day training course; the course usually takes around 7.5 hours to complete. The course’s short duration allows you to spend minimal time away from work and get qualified quickly.
The course is also available as an eLearning course that you can complete in your own time if that suits you better.
Why should I take this course?
If you want to gain the CSCS Green Labourer Card to get on a construction site, you should attend this course. The course is highly interactive and is delivered through a range of group work, discussions and presentations; and is available to complete in a range of delivery formats.
If you are new to the construction and civil engineering sector, this course will give you all the foundation health and safety knowledge you will need to work safely on-site. With the knowledge that you gain, you will also prevent accidents through safer working practices.
CITB Health and Safety Awareness course entry requirements
To attend this course, you must read, write and understand English well.
The CITB’s scheme rules state that without understanding written and spoken English, you won’t be able to read safety signs or understand warnings from other workers. Anyone who is deemed unfit will be asked to leave the course.
We also require you to bring your Photographic ID and your national insurance number on the first day of the course.
To attend the Online Learning course:
You must have access to a computer or laptop that uses a microphone, webcam and has access to the internet. Without that, you would not be able to contribute to the course, or complete the final exam properly.
Is this course accredited?
The HSA course is part of CITB’s Site Safety Plus (SSP) suite of courses. SSP is recognised nationwide as a provider of quality courses for people looking to develop themselves in the building, civil engineering, and allied industries.
After you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate, which is valid for five years. After that, you will need to complete the course again to requalify. Your certificate will arrive within 6-8 weeks.
After completing the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course, you will need to obtain your Green Labourer CSCS card. To apply for the card, you need to have attended and passed this course and passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test. You can do this in either order, but we recommend doing the training course first as this will act as a revision for the touch screen test.
How is this course delivered?
This course can be delivered in the classroom or as an Online / Remote course.
Public Classroom Courses
We provide classroom based CITB Health and Safety Awareness courses (also known as CITB HSA) in our training venues nationwide. The course is delivered in a traditional classroom environment with a trainer and up to 12 delegates.
We have multiple public dates plotted throughout the year, which means delegates can book for themselves or companies can book on behalf of their employees. Remote Learning
Remote Health and Safety Awareness courses are delivered online via a virtual classroom using Zoom. This eliminates the need to travel to attend the course as the delegate can complete the course from home or the office, saving time and money.
Delegates join the course using the link provided. However, they will need a computer or laptop with a screen, camera, microphone and access to the internet to attend a CITB training course online.
The course is delivered by a live trainer who covers the same content as they would in a classroom environment; there will be up to 12 delegates who can see each other and interact via video or webchat. Delegates are provided with a downloadable digital copy of the coursebook, and the final exam is completed online.
Like the classroom format, we have multiple public remote learning dates where it’s possible to book one or multiple spaces; the remote Health and Safety Awareness course is available to book online or over the phone.
In-house Courses
We can also arrange for the CITB Health and Safety Awareness to be delivered as an in-house course specifically for your delegates. We can deliver this course via remote learning at one of our venues or a venue of your choosing.
In-house training is a popular option for larger clients as it can be delivered on-site, and delegates can interact and discuss company-specific examples during the training. There must be a minimum of 4 delegates and no more than 12 delegates.

The certificate is valid for five years.
How do I book a CSCS test?
You can book the CSCS test in one of the training centers available online. Alternatively, we offer the CSCS course online, test and card which is the quickest way to obtain your CSCS green card in 1 day online.
The test is completed on the same day as your course, and we would apply for your green card straight away.
