The Bolton Lads and Girls Club set up the Renov8 project to help young people who are not in employment, education or training. So they gain first-hand experience in working on a live construction project. The main aim of the project is to give the selected group the relevant skills and knowledge required to work in the Construction Industry.
The project was on a four-bedroom, end-terrace in Kearsley. The building was in need of a complete transformation. It included taking down internal walls, replacing the flooring, fitting new windows and doors and decorating the property. The project team is made up of more than 100 unemployed youngsters. It also included Site Manager, Gerrard Carter. Gerrard had been provided through 3B Training’s sister company Bromak Recruitment. Seddon Construction is offered first-hand advice and support throughout.
Renov8, Bromak Recruitment and 3B Training aimed to provide the unemployed youngsters with the training required to find employment within the construction industry. 3B Training has already provided free one-day Health and Safety Awareness course. Every candidate successfully completed and passed. They will also take a CSCS Health & Safety Environment Test funded by 3B Training and Simian Skill CSCS centre. Upon completion, they will obtain the green CSCS card.
Additionally, they have taken part in an accredited First Aid course. They learned about First Aid in the workplace, incident management, CPR and care of minor injuries. Through Bolton College, they will learn Maths, English and gain a Level 2 Traineeship. They will also receive Manual Handling and Ladder Safety certificates.
Philip Burke, who is heading up the project on behalf of Bolton Lads and Girls Club, said: “We noticed there is a big gap between the employer’s expectations and what young people have achieved. Especially in construction. We have set up this life-changing project to bridge this gap.” The project is estimated to be finished by February of 2015. On completion of the project, Bromak Recruitment will also work towards finding the team members full-time employment.
