Eleven sites across Merseyside were told to stop work as a result of spot checks proved unsafe work conditions.
Eight improvement and prohibition notices were distributed by The Health and Safety Executive; to ensure work practices were changed by the contractors.
Between September and October this year; 21 of the 55 refurbishment and repair sites were deemed to have “unacceptable conditions and dangerous practices” by the regulator.
Various issues were uncovered by the spot checks, such as; general housekeeping, failure to control exposure to harmful dust; including silica and asbestos, temporary work, noise and vibration, working at height and inadequate welfare in Merseyside.
The North West’s principal inspector in construction claimed one of the main issues were cases of unsafely erected scaffolding and most of the offences were caused by the smaller companies as opposed to the larger ones. He, therefore, put this down to the fact that the industry is improving greater for the larger companies.
Asbestos and silica exposure has also stayed as a major problem and it is felt that this is a key area that contractors need to focus on more and reducing site dust.
The main cause for improvement notices to be issued was for lack of face fit testing on dusk mask and regulators.
Conditions were found poor in almost half of the 156 sites visited in the North West.
