FAQs
What is face fit testing?
Face Fit Testing is a procedure that will determine that RPE or Respiratory Protective Equipment correctly fits an individual wearer without breaking the tight seal to their face. By successfully completing the test the wearer can undertake work around harmful respiratory hazards.
Is face fit testing a legal requirement?
Yes, face fit testing is a legal requirement for anyone who is required to wear tight fitting RPE for their work; this is an approved code of practice under the COSHH Regulations 2002.
Why must RPE be face fit tested?
If RPE isn’t face fit tested by a competent person, the wearer doesn’t necessarily have a tight seal to their face. Therefore, they will be at risk of consuming harmful substances such as construction dust or gases from their work activities.
How long does a Face Fit Train the Tester certificate last?
The face fit train the tester certificate is valid for three years and must be completed again to renew upon expiry.
If the wearer has any considerable changes to their face e.g., weight loss, weight gain, dental work or facial injury they must retake the test before the three-year expiry.
How often should face fit testing be carried out?
Face fit testing must be carried out every time the wearer uses a different type of RPE, or their previous certificate has expired.
Many organisations conduct face fit testing annually at their own discretion.
Is this course CITB Grant claimable?
Yes, companies who are CITB registered can claim £60 for each delegate who successfully pass this course.
For the grant to be claimed, you must include the company name and CITB levy number on the delegates information form, which is completed before or on the first day of the course.
